I bought this board at woodcraft this aft . from their exotic leftover bin,Thinking it was 1/4 sawn mahogany it is 21.5in by 6in by 1 1/8 in thick .One face is orangey . like H mahog But the other face after planing, bliss showed the colouring of black walnut and mahogany together . I was stumped . Anyone have any idea of the name of this wood ?? thanks.

It/s not sapele. ?? planes very nicely , no smell. the other board I bought along with the 2 others I bought 2 weeks ago is Afromosia I think , looks like h. mahog ,is heavier and when cut or planed smells like doo - doo

Identifying wood by photos is not easy as there are many other properties to an ID than just visual. That said, I'd bet dollars to doughnuts that you have a plank of Goncalo Alves there.

I agree with you I checked the wood id photos, the clue is in the alternating brown and red figuring . Looks like a hybrid of walnut /mahogany , but lighter IMHO . It will probably go into making ukes

No the afromosia looks just like a mahogany but smells funky , this wood has no discernible smell. It/s likely Goncalo alves
